Navigating MyAgedCare – A Guide to Securing Funding for Home Care Packages

My Aged Care is a government run website designed to help Australians in accessing aged care services. It is the first place to look when starting on the journey of receiving aged care. This website explains the types of care available, how to access care and how to securing funding for that care.

The Australian Government subsidises the cost of in-home care support services that you can receive. What you need to pay depends on the services you need and in some cases, your financial situation. Depending on your care needs, you can access services through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (if you are able to live independently, but need support with a few tasks) or a Home Care Package (for those with more complex and ongoing care needs). If you are unsure which option is right for you, please call our team on 02 9356 0305 and we would happily guide you through the process.

1. Check your eligibility

The first step to securing funding for care at home is done via an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). In order to be assessed, you first need to check your eligibility which you can do by CLICKING HERE. If your application is successful, you will be referred for an assessment which is done in your own home.

    2. Get assessed for aged care services

After you’ve confirmed you are eligible, you will be referred to an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). They will come to your home to conduct an in-person assessment to further understand your needs and eligibility for home care packages. Once the ACAT assessment is complete, you will receive an approval letter outlining the level of care you are eligible for. This letter is crucial for securing ACAT funding.

    3. Find a provider in your area that suits your needs.

We would be honoured for you to choose our team at St Luke’s Care to care for you. To see how we can assist you and your family, please call Paula on 02 9356 0305.

    4. Manage your care and change it as your needs change

All our programs are tailored to your individual needs and are adaptable as those needs change.

Now, let’s explore some tips and tricks to streamline the process of obtaining funding for home care packages

    1. Be Prepared for the Assessment

Before the ACAT assessment, gather relevant information about your health, daily activities and support requirements. This preparation ensures a comprehensive evaluation of your needs.

    2. Understand Home Care Package Levels

Familiarise yourself with the different levels of home care packages. This understanding will help you communicate effectively with ACAT assessors and ensure that you receive the appropriate level of care. The government currently provides 4 levels of home care packages, with level 1 for basic care needs up to level 4 which is high care needs.

    3. Keep Communication Lines Open

Regularly communicate with your ACAT to stay informed about the status of your application. Clear communication helps address any concerns or additional requirements promptly.

    4. Explore Service Providers

Research and explore various home care service providers near you. You are able to choose who supports you in your home and having a list of preferred providers will allow you to make an informed choice when your funding is approved. At St Luke’s Care, we would be honoured to provide the care that you need. We can help you at any stage of your aged care journey. Please call Paula on 02 9356 0305 or email us on enquiries@slc.org.au
