HydrotherapySpeed up recovery and reduce pain

Hydrotherapy is a form of physiotherapy treatment that uses warm water to assist and resist body movements, relax and strengthen muscles and help decrease pain.

St Luke's large, heated, indoor hydrotherapy pool is an integral part of our rehabilitation program. Used in conjunction with other rehabilitation techniques, a personalised program of exercises is developed to help improve muscle power, range of movement, balance, coordination, endurance and confidence in movement.

For people with severe limitations in their movement, whatever the reason, a heated pool is often the only place where independent movement can take place. The physiotherapist is able to join the patient in the pool to guide and assist with movement.

St Luke's hydrotherapy pool is treated with ultraviolet filtration. This means that the water is gentle on the skin and the surrounding air is pleasant to breathe. Ultraviolet filtration is environmentally friendly.

Hydrotherapy is useful in the treatment of:

  • Orthopaedic and spinal conditions including fractures, dislocations, joint reconstructions, acute back pain, disc injuries, osteoporosis, post operative back surgery and post operative orthopaedic surgery such as hip and knee replacements or reconstruction, muscle and tendon injuries and sporting injuries
  • Arthritic conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, fibrositis and osteoarthritis
  • Thoracic mobilisation and fitness training in cardiac rehabilitation
  • Pain relief and mobility training in cancer care

St Luke's Hospital attracts highly qualified accredited doctors.
