Respite for CarersTaking good care of the carers

Funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing, there are several initiatives designed to support and assist relatives and friends caring at home for people who are unable to care for themselves, because of chronic illness, disability or frailty. The aim is to provide information, support and helpful assistance to enable carers to take a break from their caring role.

The National Respite for Carers Program (NRCP)

St Luke's provides regular respite to primary carers who are caring for persons living with Dementia and/or Challenging Behaviour. The program aims to provide carers with opportunities to take a break from the physical and emotional strain of caring, enabling greater participation in family, work and community activities.

The service offers:

  • Weekly in-home respite assistance
  • One-to-one community outings
  • Relaxation program for caregivers
  • Social club
  • Case management

Anyone can make a referral. The care plans are flexible and tailor-made to meet the needs of both the carer and the person being cared for.

It is a dementia specific service with highly skilled support workers in the area of Dementia Care.

Services are available to residents of the Eastern Suburbs and parts of the City of Sydney.

Relaxation Program for Caregivers

This is a 7 week skills course offering the opportunity for deep relaxation and for learning new coping skills to pro-actively reduce carer stress. There are follow-up sessions subsequent to this free course. Transport and respite assistance are available.
